About Tickfaw State Park

The park serves the region by preventing flooding during winter and spring rains when the steep banks of the Tickfaw River are flooded during the rain. The occasional flood offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the periodic life cycle of floods in the wetlands. Walking through the four ecosystems, visitors can experience the sounds and smells of water, as well as the smells and sounds of birds, animals and plants.

You may prefer a more relaxed approach offered by the nature programs of the Tickfaw State Park Natural History Museum and the Wildlife Conservation Society. Visit guided walks along the waterfront or one of the many nature trails, such as the Great Swamp Trail. You can also go for night walks or take part in a night program and listen to the nightlife of the swamp from the veranda of your house.

Take a fun-filled ride on this unique stretch of the Tickfaw River or rent a canoe and take a walk along the connected park trails. Visitors can bring their own canoes or rent them from the canoe rental.

If you are not in the mood to explore swamps and slums, the water playground offers refreshing fun for children and adults. The Tickfaw State Park Museum, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., offers souvenirs and local specialties. The car parks close at 6 am and there are only a few closed parking spaces available.

The 2 dormitory wings can accommodate up to 52 people and each cabin has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 cabins with 2 beds each. Canoes include paddles and life jackets and canoes can be rented for $5 per person or $10 per day for a total of $50.

Tours include an hour-long tour of the park, a two-hour boat trip, 2 hours of canoeing and a three-hour kayaking tour.

The promenade offers bird watching opportunities to observe wildlife, and a nearby boat ramp provides access to the park from Pontchartrain Lake. The park offers a picturesque view of the city of New Orleans, nestled between the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico on the west side of Pont Chartreuse Lake, south of St. Louis.

The Innocence Park, the only park in New Orleans, offers a variety of activities for children and adults, including canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, hiking and bird watching.

Take I-12 to the Albany - Springfield exit, merge onto LA-42, then travel one mile to downtown Springfield and then onto Interstate again at the New Orleans exit.
