Huntington was founded in 1877, and Huntington Reservoir was completed in 1890, just a few years after its opening. The name of the town and the reservoir honors the brothers William Dimick and Oliver Huntington, who first explored the area in the 1855 "s. William was famous as a scout and explorer, Oliver was the son of William Huntington and his wife Mary, who is from New York City. He was an interpreter for the local Indians and studied under the tutelage of his brother William.

Perch and red perch are among the most remarkable fish in the warm lake, but there are also a number of popular spots to catch crabs, such as the creek and river.

Many migratory birds, especially waterfowl, have been spotted in the area, and the warm water is also popular with many birds of prey, such as ducks, geese, turkeys, ducks and other bird species.
