About Jefferson National Forest

The two forests stretch from one end of Virginia to the other, stretching from the rugged beauty of the Appalachians in West Virginia, through the Kentucky mountains to the hills and valleys of North Carolina.

Of course, hiking, fishing, mountain biking and camping were pioneers, but many of the recreational opportunities in the forest are easily accessible. Camping sites developed by George Washington and Jefferson are within easy reach and there are a variety of outdoor activities available, from hiking and fishing to hunting and falconry. As you drive through the forest, enjoy the beautiful autumn colors, observe colorful neotropic birds with binoculars and enjoy the tranquility of the wilderness, remember that this national forest is a special place. Don't forget to observe falconry and don't just drive past the campsite, as Jefferson National Forest also offers many different bird watching and birdwatching opportunities, as you might imagine.

The campsite season lasts from the beginning of April to about 31 October and the amenities offered make it one of the most popular campsites in the national forest.

Group campsites are available in several areas, but for reservations please contact the District Office for more information and a list of available sites in your area.

Camping is also allowed on developed campsites, but limited to 21 days and is generally more primitive and remote than the free sites. Leave No Trace ethics is practiced, and camping is limited to a maximum of 2,500 square meters per person per day.

The forest offers excellent bait and fly fishing, and rainbow trout cover many streams and most lakes. Native brown trout are found in over 500 miles of streams, as well as many species of white and tail deer. Due to this diverse habitat, the national forest is home to a variety of wildlife such as black bears, mountain lions, black bears, coyotes, wild boars, elks, cougars, elks, deer, wolves, lynxes, white-tailed deer and many other species.

Anglers also catch perch, bluefish and catfish, as well as fish for trout and other fish species. Hunting and fishing are governed by state regulations and require a state license and a national forest stamp.

The forest area is managed during the day and offers a variety of activities such as hiking, camping, picnics, fishing and camping. Seasonal day passes are available and allow unlimited parking at picnic and bathing spots most days. Note: Fees, timetables and current costs are listed on the park's website and Jefferson National Forest parking lot.

The forest has about 2000 kilometers of hiking trails and has something to offer for everyone, from mountain bikers to hikers to mountain bikers. The internationally renowned Appalachian National Scenic Trail stretches more than 330 miles through the forest. There are also ten National Recreation Trails covering nearly 160 miles, as well as a number of trails for camping and fishing.
