About Fort Stevens State Park

Fort Stevens is one of the oldest and largest military fortifications in the United States and the only one in North America. The fort served as a U.S. Army base for the Civil War, which began in 1861 at Fort Stevens, New Mexico, north of Fort Hood, Texas. It ended at the end of the Second World War and is now a state park with a total area of 1.5 million hectares.

Today Fort Stevens has grown into a 3,700-acre park that offers exploration of history, nature and recreational opportunities. Friends of the old FortStevens run Wood to Wood, sell firewood and deliver it directly to our website. Historical programs and the restoration of our park can be co-financed by public and private donations.

Fort Stevens Park is uniquely diverse, with more than 3,700 acres of nature, nature trails, hiking trails, bike paths, fishing, swimming in freshwater lakes and a variety of other recreational activities. Check in on arrival and allow at least 30 minutes to explore the park before the start of the day's activities.

Two other smaller lakes offer boat ramps for fishing and canoeing, and Coffenbury Lake has a kayaking and fishing ramp and a picnic area with picnic tables and benches.

This summer, you can visit a closed Civil War burial ground, explore an artillery battery, browse a Civil War display case, watch forging, visit a World War II command center that served as the headquarters of the U.S. Army's 2nd Infantry Division, and take a tour for a small fee. This summer, you can visit the Fort Stevens National Historic Site, the only closed, closed, and closed Civil War cemetery in the United States.

RNW may not have any campsites available, but Fort Stevens will have a limited number of campsites outside the park. FortStevens has one of the largest and first U.S. Army campgrounds in North America and has a total area of 10,000 square feet.

Since the arriving campers have to be accommodated, an additional loop has been opened on the north side of the campsite to open additional loops for the needy.
