About Sun Lakes State Park

In its heyday, the waterfall was four times the size of Niagara Falls, but nothing of it is left. There is now a former waterfall that was dug up long ago by glacial flooding, and there is no sign that in its place, just a few feet from the water, Dry Falls is shaking.

The dramatic landscape of the park was shaped by the Ice Age that swept through the area 15,000 years ago and now overlooks the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario, the Hudson River and the Niagara River. The unusual landscape is offered to people on a day trip to Sun Lakes State Park, but is possible by appointment at the visitor center.

The park is open all year round, but the Waterfalls Visitor Centre is only open in the summer months, from June to October and also in the winter months. Other seasonal parking options include a parking garage at the visitor center and a parking lot on the north side of the park, as well as two parking garages near the waterfalls.

When active, the waterfalls are ten times larger than Niagara Falls, and the park houses a former waterfall. Between the visitor centre and the Stab Museum is a natural monument carved by glacial floods and known as Dry Fall Lake.

Originally known as Dry Falls, Sun Lakes were renamed to better describe the area, and the area is full of beautiful natural formations.

The proposed name change for Sun Lakes State Park coincides with the opening of the new visitor center and parking lot in May.

Most other services are within a few miles of the park, but there are a few parking spaces in the area and a large parking lot on the other side of Sun Lakes Road. The park covers a total of 1,500 hectares of land, about 1.5 miles long and 2,000 hectares in total.

The campsite is located in the parking lot and the maximum length of the pitch is 65 feet, possibly due to limited availability. Each campsite has a fireplace, and some campsites have fireplaces, but not all.

Be prepared for the possibility of strong winds, especially in the early morning and late evening hours of the day at weekends and in summer.

Reservations are recommended for the summer months and can be made online or by phone at 1-888-745-4357 or in person at the park office. Reservations during the winter months (June to August) are recommended as are reservations for summer years.

The park offers a full service campsite at the southern end of the park, which can accommodate up to 75 people. Fees vary by group size, but most campsites in Sun Lakes State Park and other state parks in the area can accommodate over 75 people at a cost of $5 per person.

Check-in is 14: 30, check-out is 13: 00, and quiet hours are 22: 00 and 06: 30. The park has a full-service campsite at the southern end of the park, which costs $5 per person for one night. When you make a reservation, the length of your stay is extended and you can stay as long as you like, up to a maximum of six months. A motor-powered electric generator operates daily from the campsite in Sun Lakes State Park from 11: 45 a.m. to 6: 15 p.m.

Water skiing is restricted at certain times of the year and annual passes can be purchased when staff are available. If you have any questions about Grant County boat regulations, please contact the park for more information. In Sun Lakes State Park, there are 90 unprotected picnic tables that are served first - come, come - served.

Strong winds are always possible in the park, and the centre is open during the summer months from 9 am to 5 pm and from 6 pm to 8 pm on weekdays. The Dry Falls Visitor Center is located on the south side of Lake Soap, seven miles southwest of Coulee City. From Ephrata you can walk on or near Lake Soap and enjoy a picturesque view of the lake and its many lakes and streams.
